The Obama Foundation Futures Series exposes high school students to a variety of career pathways through intimate conversations with accomplished leaders about their experiences. When Mrs. Obama sat down with young people from Hyde Park Academy—the high school located right across the street from the site of the Obama Presidential Center—to talk about their career aspirations and what they need to succeed, it sparked the idea for the Future Series. This ongoing collaboration with Hyde Park Academy brings speakers from all types of fields to share their career journeys with the students. The program speaks to our commitment to inspire, empower, and connect people to change their world. And it’s initiatives like this that will be the core of our work at the future Presidential Center.

we are here today to kick off this year's future serious and a very exciting ways from starting her career as an attorney and transitioning into public service to becoming our country's first African-American first lady she has shown and nothing is impossible everyone please welcome Michelle Obama to Hyde Park Academy I've been waiting for this for a while to be a second to get here but I am glad I am here with you and you look good I was you about a hundred years ago I'm from the same neighborhood I have the same doubts the same insecurities and if I can be here there is absolutely no reason why can't be anything you could imagine I'm donelle Reed on the owner of luella's Southern Kitchen I was born and raised here in Chicago born and raised South Side Chicago I was a graffiti kid that was sort of my intro into are the trauma surgeon my job is to take that care and order out of it and try to I nearly two people we covered here a mile outside of creating hair care products we go by saying more dentistry in Brush its impact dream deliveries is our program we deliver a 10 lb box of brand new should vegetables directly to the doorsteps of residents all over the Chicagoland area what influence you to become an entrepreneur everybody in this room has and that's just sort of a sense of competitive curiosity and just figured out how to whip kids in these communities don't get exposed to all the possibilities they feel like their options are constrained to the things that are invisible to them and so we just have to find ways to expose other possibilities how did you get through hard times while not giving up on your dream I had to learn how to practice giving my own self positive affirmations and I had to start liking every sing about me my height my color my intellect because if I didn't like it nobody would like it so it started with me and it's a daily practice that's why I come and talk to you all, I'm hoping that maybe he in this one conversation I can get somebody to think differently about what their potential is everybody repeat this after me possible I feel like being in that environment open my eyes up to being able to try and do different things a great opportunity to interact young Stars these are the Future Leaders will be making decisions about and it is through them in which we are forced to slow down and listen carefully and hear what they have to say the word for me to do this because I didn't have anything like this when I was a kid if I get the courage Kenny kid from a position from where I came from to be in the conversation of a creative artist I think you know I'm always welcoming that situation I actually came up the exact same with a lot of some of these kids now and I just like this is a good way for me to show that food and beverage is an option and you know being a chef is pretty it's pretty cool I went from high school to the military came back Bounce Around job today. Luckily found out of philanthropy and how I could make it my own something like this always thought of my life giving back I see that he here. Then he maturity he changed and that can happen with pretty much anybody I hope they took away from my story that life is not a straight line to learn through failure adversity and transforming that to the agency and opportunity and inspire me to graduate aspire so focused on my next chapter in college and just motivate me to just keep going there will always be people who are going to try to set your Barlow and the only way you can work against that is to work with your own mindset everyday you do your job you show up the way you're supposed to show up you block out the noise and before you know it you've done great things alright thank you guys
